Website or app: which does your business actually need?

It’s one of the questions we hear most: “Do I need an app, or will a website do?” The honest answer is that it depends on what you want your customers to do, and how often they’ll come back. Here’s how to think it through.

Start with a website if…

  • People need to find you first. A website is your shop window on Google. If new customers search for what you do, they need to land somewhere that looks professional and answers their questions.
  • Most visits are one-off. Someone looking up your opening hours, your services or how to contact you doesn’t want to download anything.
  • You want enquiries and bookings. A good website captures leads, takes bookings and sends them straight to the right place. No phone tag.

For most businesses, a fast, mobile-friendly website is the foundation. Everything else builds on it.

Add an app when…

  • Customers come back again and again. Hotel guests during a stay, members of a club, visitors exploring a reserve or a town: these people benefit from having you on their phone.
  • You want to reach people directly. Push notifications land on the lock screen. That’s perfect for specials, reminders, check-in details and last-minute updates.
  • There’s something to do in the moment. Online check-in, digital menus, maps, loyalty cards, room service requests: an app puts these one tap away.

We’ve built apps for hotels, conservation and heritage sites and town guides for exactly these reasons: their guests use them while they’re there, not just before they arrive.

Why not both?

Often the best answer is a website that wins new customers and an app that looks after them once they’re yours. The key is that the two talk to each other, and to the rest of your business. A booking made on the website should show up in the app. A message sent through the app should land where your team will actually see it.

Questions to ask before you spend anything

  1. What do we want a customer to do: find us, book, buy, or keep coming back?
  2. How often will the same person use it?
  3. Who on our team will update it, and how easy does that need to be?
  4. Which of our existing tools (email, bookings, accounts) should it connect to?

If you can answer those four, the right choice usually becomes obvious.
